William C. “Bill” Bloom passed away peacefully at home at the age of 91. While his family’s hearts are heavy, they are also deeply grateful for the long and full life he lived.
Bill married the love of his life, Johnny Rankin, in June of 1952 at the Little White Chapel in Las Vegas. What began after just one week of knowing one another became a remarkable love story that spanned more than 60 years. Their enduring devotion to each other remains an inspiration to those who knew them. Johnny preceded him in death on February 26, 2021.
He proudly served his country in both the United States Navy and the United States Air Force. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and went on to work as a civilian engineer for the Department of Defense. He contributed to the development and testing of the Tomahawk missile project and spent years working off the coast of California at San Clemente Island. California was home for much of his adult life, along with a short season in Hawaii. During those years, he enjoyed building jet boats and racing them on the river.
Despite a very difficult upbringing, Bill was a gifted athlete in his youth, playing football and surfing with strength and fearlessness.
Eventually, Bill and Johnny moved to Texas, where he built their country home and worked at Red River Army Depot. Later, he accepted a position in Washington, D.C., at Walter Reed Medical Center, where he made meaningful engineering contributions and assisted in developing laboratories used for disease research. Though that role required time away from home, he ultimately returned to Texas upon retirement.
In his later years, he found joy in simpler pursuits — tending to his yard, caring meticulously for his home, and building with his hands, as he always had. He was known to be exacting and particular, often bringing his trademark perfectionism even to the smallest details — a trait his family teased him about with affection.
Bill played a significant role in raising his granddaughter during her early years, walking her down the aisle and offering steady support throughout her childhood. Together with Johnny, he helped shape the lives of those around him. His family traveled widely during his career, visiting him wherever his work assignments led and spending time with loved ones across the country.
Bill was, at times, a man rough around the edges. His early hardships, years of military service, and the heartbreaking loss of a son at just eight years old left lasting marks. He could be stubborn and strong-willed, and not always easy. Yet those who extended grace often experienced his quieter kindness in return. In his own reserved way, his love was present — even if not always spoken.
Following Johnny’s passing in 2021, Bill struggled deeply with her absence. His family finds comfort in believing he is now at peace, reunited with his beloved wife and the son they lost so many years ago.
He will be remembered for his service, his intelligence, his work ethic, his sacrifices, and the complicated but genuine love he carried for his family.
